Portia & Reuben Update

Please see previous post for Friday.

Portia and Reuben are both doing great. Although Portia occasionally gets jealous (which can be expected), it is clear to us that she really loves having a brother. And Reuben is madly in love with her. She makes him laugh with every little move and the moment she enters the room, you see a smile coming across his face. He's gaining strength every day and his appetite continues to grow. At 16 months of age, he still looks like he's only about 8 or 9 months, due to the lack of nutrition, but he's starting to bridge that gap. He's loving the freedom to roam, and tires fairly quickly but that's only because he wasn't as active before. He's enjoying the stimulation and is quite content with the little things. He has started saying "Da da" which of course makes Alex puff up with pride. Reuben is also sleeping really well, infact he sleeps through the night now and has about 2 naps during the day. I remember Portia sleeping alot at first too, so it's probably the body's way of healing. He's really liking it here, the pool, the playground and swing, but for some odd reason, he has a fear of sand. We tried to put him down on the sand but he instantly starts making monkey noises and swings his legs up so his feet don't touch down. Who knows what he's thinking all I know is that we're enjoying seeing things through his eyes for the first time. What a treasure we have found!

It's wonderful seeing little Reuben with his family. Things look like they are going so well. I'm sitting here at my parents' house showing your photos to Sarah. I reminded her who Reuben is by showing her the photo of her with Reuben at the top of your blog and also one of those photos is on the calendar this month that I had made and is hanging on the wall in my mom's office. Enjoy your remaining time in Vietnam. It all goes by so quickly. It's hard to believe it's been 10 months since we met Reuben and brought Sarah home.

We are all so happy for you. Reuben is an amazing little guy. When Liem saw his photo he said "wow, cute kid, looks like Bien." Great to hear that you are loving Viet Nam as much as we did (it never gets out of your system). Small world... we met Rennie (and George) at a dinner party just before Christmas. Say hi to Rennie and hope she'll be home soon. And say hi to Loan from us. She'll remember us as the family with the little firecracker wild-child (aka Meili). Hope all continues to go smoothly.
